Many of us assume we can treat our skin the same all year, then get frustrated when we end up with dry, chapped skin in the winter. The air is cold and dry, even in the Vancouver area in the winter and you need adjust your skin care routine accordingly. Be sure to follow these tips from White Rock Skin & Laser to help prevent and treat dry winter skin.
1. Shower/Bathe in warm water, not hot.
Hot water strips essential oils off the skin which dries it out. We suggest you bathe/shower in warm water which allows the skin to absorb more moisture. Also, keep your time in the tub limited to no longer than ten minutes.
2. Use the right cleanser
It’s very important to use gentle cleansers on your body and face during the winter months. Look for unscented, soap-free, or mild soap cleansers and body washes. These will be the least likely to irritate and exacerbate dry skin problems.
3. Pat dry, don’t rub!
Gently towel dry with using a patting motion to ensure you don’t damage your skin. This is especially true for your face!
4. Moisturize
Your skin is most receptive of moisturizers 3-5 minutes after your shower or bath. Try the Teoxane Advanced Filler for your face which is rich in hyaluronic acid.
5. Nourish your skin
Fight free radical damage and repair signs of aging with a good quality vitamin C serum (ZO 10% Vitamin C) or a combination of vitamins and antioxidants (ZO Daily Power Defense).
6. Exfoliate
Your skin will look and feel better if you remove dry, dead skin cells. The ZO Exfoliating Polish is one of our FAVOURITE products and works wonders!
7. SPF
Don’t skip on the SPF just because it’s not summer! Making SPF a part of your daily skin care routine can make a lasting impact on the condition of your skin, as well as helps protect from sun damage that can lead to other health conditions! We love the ZO Skin Health Sunscreen + Primer SPF 30, or the ZO Daily Sheer if you don't want any colour.
8. Humidifier
Use a humidifier in your home to ensure your skin doesn’t dry out. The air inside your home can be harsh, especially with the heat on, so the humidifier helps soften the impact of the air, leaving your skin in much better condition!
9. Watch what you eat and drink!
The holiday season often lends to worse eating habits and higher alcohol consumption, both of which leave your skin in less than optimal condition. Be sure you’re drinking plenty of water and eating light, healthy foods that are rich in essential fatty acids.
