PRP for Joint Pain
Platelet Rich Plasma (or PRP) treatments at White Rock Skin & Laser Clinic are a natural, gradual way to improve joint function, reduce pain and even help repair tissues in the joint. It works by reintroducing growth factors using your own platelets. The platelets are separated from your own blood and purified in a special process. The growth factors are powerful proteins that stimulate tissue growth. PRP is an excellent non-surgical alternative for treatment of osteoarthritis, sports injuries, plantar fasciitis, tennis or golfer's elbow and soft tissue inflammation.
This treatment has also been used for years for the treatment of hair loss and skin rejuvenation, after gaining popularity in sports medicine and being widely publicized for it's incredible results.
Following a consultation with our physician, a small amount of blood is taken from you and then prepared in a special way to purify the platelets and release the growth factors. The injection area is treated with local anesthetic for a more comfortable treatment and the PRP is then injected into the joint. Three treatments are required for optimal results with maintenance treatments as recommended.
This treatment is not an alternative to joint replacement surgery however can be an excellent option to delay or prevent a surgery. White Rock Skin & Laser Clinic also offers injections of a hyaluronic acid for joint lubrication in conjunction with PRP treatments. The short and long-term benefits of this combination therapy are loved by clients.
Curious how PRP compares to traditional cortisone injections? Cortisone can lead to degeneration of cartilage in the joint, while PRP benefits the joint. In a large trial conducted in the UK, knees treated with cortisone were compared to PRP treated knees and the trial results showed further thinning of the cartilage in the cortisone treated knees while the cartilage in the PRP treated knees was thicker and healthier.
